Prophet Muhammad (SAW) was born in Mecca in the year 570. This time is called by the Europeans refer to as the Middle Ages. Prophet Muhammad (SAW) grew being known as the truthfulness, generosity, and sincerity. Earning the name al Amin, the trustworthy one.
Prophet Muhammad (SAW) was of a contemplative nature and had long detested the decadence of his society. At the age of 40, while engaged in a meditation retreat, Prophet Muhammad received his first revelation from Allah through the Angel Gabriel. This revelation continued for twenty three years and is know as the Quran.
Prophet Muhammad (SAW) began to recite the words that were revealed to him from Gabriel, and to teach the that Allah revealed to him. The people of Mecca were steeped in their ways of ignorance and opposed Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and his small group of followers every way. These early Muslims suffered bitter persecution.
In the year 622 Allah gave Prophet Muhammad (SAW) the command to emigrate. This is called the Hijrah. The Muslims left Mecca for the city of Madinah, which was about 260 miles north. This event marks year one in the Muslim calendar.
The city of Madinah provided Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and the Muslims safe and nurturing haven from where Islam grew.
After several years the Prophet (SAW) and his followers returned to Mecca, where they forgave their enemies and established islam definitively.
Prophet Muhammad (SAW) died at the age of 63 and was buried in Madinah. At the time of his death, the greater part of Arabia was Muslim. Within a century Islam had spread to Spain in the west, and as far east as China.
